Overview
Every System Campaign in Audience Activation sends to a system audience by default. When your dealership needs to reach a different group of shoppers with a System Campaign, for example to leave out certain lead or customer statuses, you can replace its audience for your dealership only.
The campaign remains the same System Campaign, with the same campaign ID, setups, templates and reporting, and it continues to receive system content updates. Only the audience it sends to is customized.
How It Works
A customized audience applies to your dealership only. Every other dealership using that System Campaign keeps the default system audience.
What a customized audience affects
| Customized for your dealership | Stays with the System Campaign |
|---|---|
| The audience the campaign sends to for your dealership | The campaign ID, setups and templates |
| The audience count shown on the campaign | Reporting, which stays on the same campaign |
| System content updates, which the campaign keeps receiving |
Which audiences you can choose
You can choose any audience available to your dealership: the other system audiences, or your own custom audiences. The selected audience is calculated exactly the way it is when used on a Custom Campaign, with no additional filters added.
System audiences vs. custom audiences
System audiences automatically exclude customers who:
- Are not in market
- Have an imminent sale
- Bought recently
- Have a recent or upcoming appointment
- Recently engaged with another rooftop in your dealer group
What still applies to every send
Whichever audience you choose, these protections still apply at send time:
- Unsubscribes
- Campaign-level opt-outs
- Frequency caps
When a new audience takes effect
After you save, the new audience is recalculated for your dealership and is used starting from the campaign's next send run.
Where to Find It
In Audience Activation, open any System Campaign. The Audience field on the campaign page has an edit pencil to the right and is a dropdown that lists the audiences available to your dealership.

How to Change a System Campaign's Audience
Changing the audience at a glance:
- Open the System Campaign
- Select a new audience
- Confirm the custom audience notice
- Save and review the new audience
Step 1 — Open the System Campaign
In Audience Activation, open the System Campaign you want to change. The Audience field shows the audience the campaign currently uses for your dealership.
Step 2 — Select a new audience
Open the Audience dropdown and choose from the list of audiences available to your dealership.
Are you choosing a system audience or a custom audience?
- System audience: the selection is applied directly. Skip to Step 4.
- Custom audience: a notice opens before the selection is applied. Continue to Step 3.
Step 3 — Confirm the custom audience notice
The notice explains that custom audiences don't apply the automatic exclusions that system audiences do (see System audiences vs. custom audiences above).
- Confirm keeps the custom audience you selected.
- Cancel returns the campaign to its previous audience.
Step 4 — Save and review the new audience
Save the change. The campaign shows the new audience, and its count appears once the audience has been recalculated. The campaign also displays an Audience customized marker, so it's easy to see that this System Campaign is using a different audience than the default.
Reset to the Default Audience
To return a System Campaign to its original system audience, select Reset to default audience from the Audience customized marker and confirm. The default audience is used again starting from the next send run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the audience affect other dealerships?
No. The change applies only to your dealership. Every other dealership keeps the campaign's default audience.
Will the campaign still receive system updates?
Yes. It's still the same System Campaign, with the same campaign ID, setups and templates, so it keeps receiving system content updates and reporting stays on the same campaign.
Why didn't I see a notice when I changed the audience?
The notice only appears when you select a custom audience. Switching to another system audience doesn't show it, because system audiences already apply the automatic exclusions.
What happens if I duplicate a campaign with a customized audience?
The duplicate keeps the customized audience, whether you duplicate it for the dealership or for the dealer group.
Do unsubscribes and opt-outs still apply with a custom audience?
Yes. Unsubscribes, campaign-level opt-outs and frequency caps apply to every send, regardless of which audience the campaign uses.
